役に立つもの、高価なものというよりは、相手のことをどれくらい考えたか、ふさわしいものを選んだかというその「準備」にこそ、贈り物の本質がある。つまりは、贈り手にとっては、贈る前の心と身体のエキササイズこそが、贈り物という文化のエッセンスだということになる。
